DISPATCH 02: Setting Up
Previous Dispatch : Next Dispatch

KOOBI FORA, Kenya

This week we are hoping to complete a big excavation at Ileret. This is the site in
Area 12  when in 2002 during the final weeks of the field season, one of the team, Robert Moru , found the basicranium of a hominid protruding from the sediment.

On recovery it was beautifully preserved although its face was missing. The lower jaw was intact and so there is a good chance of finding more of this specimen in the excavation this year. We will begin the excavation as soon as the camp is up.

The truck drove north from Koobi Fora three and a half hours to Ileret. We are camped this year on the edge of a small pan close to the road and some five kilometres from the site. The truck carried the tents, supplies, fuel and water. All the drinking water is brought from Koobi Fora so it is used with care. Water for washing and showers is collected from the lake shore some 20 minutes away. Over the following two days the tents were put up, the solar panels and inverter rigged, the camp kitchen in full production. The camp is now set and the team spent a few days looking for fossils in the Area awaiting the arrival of Meave and Patrick Gathogo.
