DISPATCH 04: To Ileret
Previous Dispatch : Next Dispatch

With the work progressing well now in area 104 we split the team into two. Half of the team are headed north with a small load of camping equipment and fresh water to work at Ileret near the Kenya-Ethiopia border. The second half of the team continued working from Koobi Fora. Journeys are never without their trials and this one was no exception when the lorry got stuck to its axles in the sand river close to one of the Ileret water holes to which women and children come to collect their drinking water collect their drinking water. The team spent a full day jacking it up, moving stones and cut branches under the wheels. As the sun went down the team set up camp by the lorry and got out their bedrolls bedrolls. The following morning, trackways of chicken wire and Hessian under the tyres and a good pull by the police lorry with plenty of onlookers successfully moved the truck out of the river.

They went on to build a small camp by Ileret Laga, putting out solar panels to charge the
lights for the evening. Ileret is closer to the Omo River at the north eastern end of Lake Turkana. The terrain is dotted with many striking pink desert roses and tall termite mounds.
