DISPATCH 09: Our Work Continues
Previous Dispatch : Next Dispatch

KOOBI FORA, Kenya

The rain clouds are building to the north and we sent the truck north to collect the remainder of the sieving sediment from the Ileret camp. On the way the second rear centre bolt sheared and so it limped back to camp where we had to drill out the piece and fix it up with spare parts that had to be brought in from Nairobi.

After a second attempt to go north the team spent most of the day trying to get the lorry out of a sandy stretch and so finally the third attempt was successful and all the sacks are now back in camp and will be screened in the coming month.

Meanwhile the Ileret Primary School had invited Meave to be the
guest of honour at their parents day and we flew in for the morning. The children entertained the parents with skits and dancing, and there were some moving words said by members of the community. The school is still in desperate need of additional class rooms, teachers, books, water storage, desks, chairs and staff housing. These items are part of an even longer wish list. Recent improvements to the school were made by the Catholic Mission at Ileret through funds raised by Koobi Fora research project. This new classroom and hall block has enabled two additional levels to be taught at the school.

During this final week in the field we had our friend Elizabeth Gilbert with us who recently published an extraordinary book on the Masai Broken Spears. While she was with us she spend some mornings on the beach and found many black fish bones on the beach which she thought made interesting
art pieces when reconstructed into make-believe skeletons in the sand.

Four people are to remain in camp during April. Will change them over in May and get the entire team back for continued season in June. Everyone else has been paid off and will travel to Nairobi at the end of the week in the truck and vehicle. We are due to return in Early June 2005 with the entire team to begin another intensive season of search and discovery.
