DISPATCH 09: Lung fish and goats galore

Previous Dispatch
: Next Dispatch

The fossils that the crew are finding are good, and the collection team is busy behind them. There was a right hand side of the maxilla (upper jaw) of a baboon with full dentition, fabulous preservation of the scales of a large lungfish called Polypterus, as well as the skull and some bones from a very large catfish. There must have been many of this size in the lakes and rivers of that time as we find plenty of remains although this was an unusually complete specimen.

The camp has been visited daily by herdsmen wanting to sell us goats. However they are not bringing in 2 at a time but anything between 10 and 15 with every reason under the sun as to why we should buy them. Although the camp manages to put away almost one goat a day, there is not a way that we can keep up with their expectations.

We did have to spend a day last week looking for 2 goats that had been purchased but that had promptly ran back home again. Its getting drier and windier in the days now and it looks increasingly as if there will be drought again this year as the grass has not recovered with the little amount of rain that there was.
